The Garland Independent School District is the second largest district in Dallas County and one of the largest districts in the state of Texas, with over 57,000 students enrolled. There are 2 prekindergarten schools, 47 elementary schools, 13 middle schools, and 7 high schools. Every school in the district provides the same high level of instruction. GISD also offers a variety of magnet programs from elementary level through high school. Garland ISD is only one of a handful of districts nationwide that offers open enrollment options for students. While other districts use attendance zones to determine who goes where, GISD parents are able to choose the campus they wish to have their child attend. Each year, approximately 98% of GISD students receive their "school of choice". All campuses reflect minority/majority ratios of the ethnic and economic diversity of the district as a whole.
